Larry Gibson, my second undergrad writing teacher, used to come to class with a large mug of coffee, sip while listening to the fumbled prose of beginners, nodding with an occasional mumble, and when the mug was empty he’d stand up and dismiss class. Only later did we learn that the coffee was bourbon. Anyways, a student once asked him the best advice for how to write, and looking down into that mug for a moment, Larry looked up and said, slowly, calmly: “Nobody cares if you write, nobody cares if you don’t write.”

Frankly, hearing that was liberating.
